My Journey
My journey through ceramics has been one of discovery and growth. From a young age, I was fascinated by how clay could be transformed, finding comfort and creativity in shaping it into beautiful and useful objects. This passion led me to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD), where I improved my skills and developed a deep appreciation for the balance between form and function. After graduation, I was fortunate to live and create on both the east and west coasts of Canada. However, the draw of the east coast eventually brought me back home.
The tactile nature of ceramics has always resonated with me. The process of transforming raw clay into a finished piece is both humbling and empowering, a dialogue between the material and my hands. Each step, from the initial wedging to the final glaze firing, requires patience, precision, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected.
My Inspiration
My studio space, nestled next to the sea in St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia, offers a serene environment where creativity flourishes. The ebb and flow of the tides, the changing light, and the raw beauty of the coastline are constant sources of inspiration. This connection to nature is reflected in my work, where organic shapes and earthy tones evoke a sense of place and belonging.
My Work
I find immense joy in the communal aspect of pottery – knowing that my work becomes a part of someone's daily life. Whether it’s a mug for morning coffee or a bowl or platter for family dinners, these objects hold stories and memories. I am honored to contribute to these moments, providing a canvas for life’s simple pleasures.
I focus on making functional tableware and large serving vessels, designed to enhance the experience of sharing meals with loved ones. I use techniques like sgraffito and relief carving, which are both time-consuming and meditative, resulting in pieces that are unique and functional. Over the past 30 years, my goal has remained the same: to create pots that are beautiful, practical, and loved by their owners. Each piece I craft carries a sense of connection and history, reflecting the journey of both the maker and the user, and the shared moments around them.
